Lithium Ion Batteries : The Future of Energy

On searching Lithium ion battery in Wikipedia, the following info came out –

The batteries, lithium ions move from the negative electrode through an electrolyte to the positive electrode during discharge, and back when charging. Li-ion batteries use an intercalated lithium compound as the material at the positive electrode and typically graphite at the negative electrode. The batteries have a high energy density, no memory effect (other than LFP cells) and low self-dischargr. They can however be a safety hazard since they contain a flammable electrolyte, and if damaged or incorrectly charged can lead to explosions and fires.

After the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2019) awarded to John GoodenoughM.Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino for the development of Lithium ion batteries, the people are searching for its application.

Well, as we all know, we are using Lithium ion batteries from quite a long time. The following are its widely used application –

• Cellphone batteries

• Laptop batteries

• Power Storage

• Electric vehicle

• Solar energy storage

• Marine vehicles

The various advantages of Lithium ion batteries are as follows –

• They don’t create pollution.

• They are rechargeable.

• They are light weight.

There are many countries which are producing lithium ion batteries and thus making a fortune. Some of those top countries which are producing lithium are given below (as of 2018) –

Lithium ion batteries

According to a report on Forbes, China is dominating lithium ion battery production. Chinese lithium reserves in 2018 were one million metric tons, nearly 30 times U.S. levels.

Fact 💡

With the invention of this lithium ion battery, many countries are coming up to cash in this opportunity.
